"How can we screen for our fertility?"
Women:
The babystart® FertilCheck™ fertility screening test for women measures the sex hormone that is an indicator of a their biological fertility clock.
A woman's fertility starts to decline after she gets to 30 and gradually accelerates until she gets to menopause. This reduction in fertility is reflected in a gradual increase in the the hormone FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). Rising levels of FSH tend to be associated with reduced fertility. As menopause approaches the levels get particularly high and act as an early warning system.
The test is greater than 99% accurate.
With this test a negative result is going to be good news although its not proof of fertility. A positive test result suggests that fertility is reduced and we recommend that a woman see her doctor to discuss the results and perhaps have more tests done.
Men:
The babystart® FertilCount™ Infertility screening test for men measures sperm count, which is widely recognised as the major indicator of fertility in men.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO)
a man is at risk of infertility if his sperm count is less than 20 million per ml, the home test kit contains two tests and will identify if the numbers of sperm are under this cut-off level.
Sperm counts are falling in the western world and
no-one knows why. A sensible precaution is to get yourself tested when thinking about having a family.
The test is 97% accurate.
With this test a negative result is going to be good news although its not proof of fertility. A positive test result suggests that fertility is reduced and we recommend that a man see his doctor to discuss the results and perhaps have more tests done.
Couples:
The babystart® FertilCheckPlus™ fertility screening test for both men and measures sperm count in men and the sex hormone FSH in women. This is a combination twin test pack for couples to share in the privacy of their own home.
"How can we be sure of the right time to have intercourse?"
The babystart® FertilTime™ Ovulation Test detects increases in the LH hormone in a woman's urine.
The LH hormone triggers ovulation and as soon as a positive test result is seen it is the optimum time for intercourse. If you have been trying unsuccessfully to conceive for just a few months, there is probably no need to worry. It is a fact that even if a couple are fertile, they only have about a 25 - 30% chance of conceiving, even when they have intercourse at exactly the right time of the month! For this reason it is not difficult to see why it takes most couples at least 3-6 months to conceive.
However, as many as one in six couples can take a year or more to conceive and these delays in becoming pregnant can simply be a result of bad timing. This means that sexual intercourse is not taking place during the 2 to 3 days leading up to the time of ovulation - the most fertile days in a woman's menstrual cycle.
The babystart® FertilFocus™ is a high-quality saliva-based fertility test (or personal ovulation microscope) that allows you to predict ovulation with accuracy. The perfect helper for trying-to-conceive couples. Fertile-Focus is a reusable ovulation predictor test, meaning you receive unlimited tests in one high-quality, low-cost personal ovulation microscope. The microscope comes with complete instructions and an ovulation fertility chart for tracking results!
Getting the hang of the microscope takes no time at all. With a powerful 60X lens and gentle LED light, just focus the eyepiece to view your test result. For best results, test in the morning before eating or drinking or brushing your teeth, and then record results on a calendar or fertility chart. Soon, you will recognise the unique saliva patterns that indicate infertile, fertile, and transitional periods.

"How long will it take to become pregnant?"
If you are both fertile we would expect you to conceive within 3-4 months by following the advice above. Any longer and we would advise you seek help and explain that you have been doing everything right... yet not had a result - this is evidence that you may benefit from some medical help.
The babystart® ECOstrip™ Pregnancy test offers all the accuracy, speed and ease of use as a normal pregnancy test but has only a small fraction of the waste.
The test is greater than 99% accurate.
Positive results can show in less than 60 seconds. All you have to do is dip the test into urine for 10-15 seconds. The test can be used as early as 10 days after conception.
The key to natural conception and pregnancy is to do the following:
For the woman:
Check your fertility, start a course of vitamins, identify when you are about to ovulate and have intercourse at the right time.
For the man:
Check your sperm concentration, start a course of vitamins, abstain from intercourse or masturbation for at least 3 days before your partner is expected to ovulate. Have intercourse with your partner just before or at the time your partner is ovulating. Work together to optimise your chances of conception.
So, if you are planning a pregnancy or have taken longer than expected to conceive, plan your family planning and to complete the preparation,
Adopt a healthy lifestyle.
1. Eat well.
This means both of you eating a well balanced diet but not over-eating. What you eat it can have a profound effect on your health. Take prenatal supplements to ensure adequate levels of nutritional support.
2. Take plenty of regular exercise but do not overdo it. High levels of exercising such as endurance training can cause delays in conception. Also watch out for those steroid based supplements offered during weight training and bodybuilding programmes, they can be particularly harmful for male fertility where they can knock out sperm count!
3. Refrain from smoking or taking recreational drugs.
4. Refrain from drinking alcohol.
5. Avoid any exposure to toxic chemicals.
6. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medications or treating infections.
7. Limit caffeine intake. New research indicates even relatively small amounts (several cups of coffee a week, for example) can increase mis-carriage risk.
8. For women, make sure that you are Rubella immune. If you take a blood test before you get pregnant, for example, your doctor can tell you if your body contains certain antibodies that guard against German measles. If you lack the antibodies, you can get a German measles vaccination three months before you become pregnant to give the live virus time to leave your system before the virus is exposed to a pregnancy.
9. If you have a family history of birth defects, or disease, talk to your physician. He or she may recommend a visit with a genetic counselor.
10. Try to rid your life of excessive stress and tension.
